2020 Departmental Poster Competition

chaired by Andrew Whitbeck
Friday, 6 November 2020 from to (America/Chicago)
Description
Day-of information for judges and sepctators:

At the start of the poster competition, we'll have a short introduction before we kick things off.  The zoom link for this introduction is attached to the first item of the agenda.   After the introduction, we'll start -- which means all of the presenters will go off into their respective zoom rooms to wait for an audience.  The intent is that you're free to go to all of the various zoom rooms to hear a poster/talk get presented and talk to the presenters about their research.  If you have trouble or get confused about anything, the introduction zoom room will serve as a hub and someone will be there to help you out.  Otherwise, treat this like any other poster session and wander to where you think the most interesting research is; the agenda give you titles, abstracts, and PDFs of each of the contributions so that you can figure out what you're most interested in.  Once you find it, click the zoom link or download the recording and go!

Please note that some of our presenters have conflicts during certain times and may not be available when you click on their zoom link; if this happens, please check back later!

Finally, this year we're trying something new.  Some presentations will be asynchronous, so you can check those out any time you would like.  For these presentations, a link to download the recording will be next to the agenda item along with a pdf of the presentation materials.

General information for presenters:

Sigma Pi Sigma and GRASP are hosting the 4th Annual Department of Physics and Astronomy Poster Competition! It will be held on Friday, November 6th from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. This year, we will have two separate divisions: Graduate and Undergraduate Students, assuming there are enough participants in each division. While the participation of all students involved in research are strongly encouraged, this is especially a good opportunity for anyone planning to present a poster at the Texas APS meeting (November 12-14) or other conferences this year. This competition offers participants the opportunity to practice their poster presentation and receive feedback to improve their poster design before going to conferences.
The deadline for abstract submission will be Wednesday, October 28th at 11:59 pm and the deadline for poster submission a week later, Friday, November 03rd at 11:59 pm. Posters should be appropriate for 36"x 48" format and utilize university-approved templates along with some poster making tips are available from the Teaching, Learning, & Professional Development Center, Graduate School.
Poster
Competition will be held in two categories.  Contestants can
(1): participate in video/audio presentations
Those who are going to participate in video/audio presentations need to upload the video/audio track with the poster to Indico.
(2): participate in live presentations.
Those who are going to participate in live presentations should be logged in to zoom during the event (The zoom link will be uploaded to Indico page before the event). Participants are expected to be connected to zoom on time to present their poster to audience members and judges for the full 3 hours.
Judging of the posters will be based on a rubric, an example can be found here. Posters belong to both categories will be judged by several people and graded rubrics will be used to identify the top posters within each division.
If you have already submitted an abstract and it has been accepted, you can upload your poster and three minutes video/audio track of the presentation by following the "My contributions" link on the main agenda page, from there if you click on "view" followed by "Add Material", you should be able to upload a PDF and video/audio track to indico.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send Dr. Whitbeck and Samila Muthumuni an email. With a little over a month to work on posters and cash prizes on the line, we look forward to another great turnout this year!
Organizing Committee: Samila Muthumuni (Chair, Sigma Pi Sigma, GRASP).
Advisory Committee: Dr. Whitbeck (Sigma Pi Sigma Faculty Advisor), Dr. Huang (GRASP Advisor).
