This year, as in previous years [1], the Department of Physics and Astronomy will hold a special seminar on November 3 at 5:30 pm [2] to explain the achievements of this year's Nobel Prizes in Physics/Chemistry to the public in an easy and fun way. Q&A As you may already know, the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics [3] was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter”. They have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy. [3] https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/2023/press-release/ The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023 [4] was awarded to Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Aleksey Yekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots”. Quantum dots now illuminate computer monitors and television screens based on QLED technology (e.g., SAMSUNG QLED TV). They also add nuance to the light of some LED lamps, and biochemists and doctors use them to map biological tissue.
