Instructor: Christine Granados is the author of six books, including Brides and Sinners in El Chuco as well as biographies for young adults. She has published essays in Texas Monthly and Texas Ob- server, has worked as a journalist for several newspapers and was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2014.

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (working lunch, box lunch provided)

The first day session reviews statistical information that supports the need for incorporating Mexican- American literature in the school curriculum.  It also offers various activities that can be used in the classroom with hands-on activities that teachers can adopt and modify for their students. Furthermore, the workshop provides:
  • Lessons that are TEKS-aligned
  • Interdisciplinary teaching ideas
  • An opportunity to meet an author
  • Free copy of the “Made in Texas Teacher Guide,” a collection of reproducible readings and lesson plans
  • Interactive activities based on readings from the "Made in Texas Teacher Guide"
  • Strategies for modifying lessons for various student populations
  • Multi-media resources that can be used in the classroom

Thursday, July 10, 2014 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (working lunch, box lunch provided)

The second day session is an overview of the history of Mexican-American literature and a chance to work personally with an author. It also provides:
  • An opportunity for teachers and author(s) to co-create lessons
  • “Best practices” sharing sessions with colleagues and author(s)
  • Lists of additional readings relevant to popular Mexican-American themes
  • Supplemental binder with more ideas for taking your teaching to the next level
  • Supplemental pamphlet with creative writing ideas
