Professional preparation

by Richard H. Price (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

Tuesday, 2 February 2021 from to (America/Chicago)
Description
Speaker: Dr. Richard H. Price (Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

Title: Professional Preparation

Abstract: The classroom and the workplace are very different, and students need to be prepared for their post-classroom lives. Most curricula in STEM fields do little or nothing in the way of preparation. This talk will describe a course that has been a great success in doing this, by honing student communication skills, by introducing them to the way in which some knowledge of law and management are not only important in the STEM workplace but are actually interesting!

About the speaker: Richard Price has a Master's equivalent degree in Engineering Physics from Cornell University and a PhD in theoretical physics from Caltech. He was a professor of physics at the University of Utah from 1971-2004, during part of which time he was also an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering; from 2004 to 2015 he was a professor of physics at the University of Texas; he joined the MIT faculy in 2016. From 2017 to 2020 he was Editor in Chief of the American Journal of Physics. His research focus has been gravitational waves and black hole physics, but he has also worked in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, medical physics, and science pedagogy. He has published 135 articles in scientific journals, along with 3 books and miscellaneous publications, and shares 3 patents on microelectromechanical devices. He is a Fellow both of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
